I LOVE the movie, one of my favorites of all time (and still watchable a half-century later). BUT ... that music is dreadful, and only a supreme nerd-geek would have chased all over the web universe to find it, the same way you'd chase a freeware operating system for a Chromebook, the kind of guy who chooses Google Plus over Facebook, while waiting for My Space to make a comeback which you'll read on a Blackberry. After using it for a...A footnote to this adventure. After using it for a few days my Linux installation began to crash with "kernel panics" which is the equivalent of the infamous Windows "blue screen of death." This is such a rare occurrence in Linux that it generally portends a serious hardware problem. I checked the partitions on the SSD and found no problems. Then I thought to test the memory again. I had done that after I first installed it, and no problems were found. But this time it immediately lit up with lots of error messages. The memory board had flaked out.

So all I had to do was replace the board with the 2 gig one that I had removed, and all was well again in Linux land. It has become a rare thing for memory to fail so it's easy to overlook it. But this reminded me that in the old days it was one of the first things we would look for. On the Apple II for example, RAM chips were generally inserted into sockets so they could be easily replaced when they went bad. The down side of that was they could work themselves loose from heating and cooling, so the first thing to try was pressing them into the sockets. Nowadays the chips are hard soldered to their boards by robots because the traces are too tiny and thin for humans to manipulate. But this was a lesson to me -- they can still fail. I know he had a sister that lived in Pittsburgh area. I met her once when she came to visit. I don't believe I have known anyone in the music field that knew more about music than Arnold. He once gave a private recital, on a beautiful Harpsichord at his Workshop, for some 3 hours. It was just the three of us, & I must say it was a recital of a lifetime for my wife & I. Later after the private performance, he said he gave a recital for the king of Saudi Arabia, I think it was king Saud, Saud bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, at one of his many weddings. The Harpsichord was custom made by the king for the event. Afterwards the instrument was presented to Arnie as a gift by the king. It was that very instrument I personally listened to Arnie play at that private recital. I will never forget how perfect he played that instrument. I moved away for a time from the Miami area, & when I came back for a short visit in about circa 1986, maybe 1987, I went by the Recorder Workshop for a visit. I was shocked to find a deep hole in the ground where the Recorder Workshop once stood. I called his phone number & reached a person that told me Arnie had a stroke & was in a hospice being cared for. That is all they would tell me. I asked if I could visit him while in town, & was told he could not receive visitors. I really respected that man for everything he stood for in the music world. I only wish I could have seen him one more time before the end. Sincerely, Friend of Arnold Grayson.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15680405.post-76559469696374543462011-09-26T09:05:56.750-04:002011-09-26T09:05:56.750-04:00Someone once said of a favorite bookstore, "I...Someone once said of a favorite bookstore, "It's the kind of place you go to be reassured by all the Anthony Trollope novels you have not yet read."The Northttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05130581076876274184noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15680405.post-66211970682209327632011-09-25T22:19:23.774-04:002011-09-25T22:19:23.774-04:00Time changes us, circumstances change the time ava...Time changes us, circumstances change the time available.
